5 Questions To Ask Yourself Before Your Next Salon Visit
What is your hair story?
I have been a hairstylist for twenty years. In that time I have discovered that everyone has at least one. A story about the ever evolving relationship between you and your hair.
Whether you view your hair as simply something you have to maintain or your mane is your self identifier, you have a relationship with your hair. The key ingredient to a good relationship is exploration.
We can become stuck in some sort of delusion that our hair is the same as it was in our youth. What worked in the past might need to be altered for the better health of your locks.
Before your next hair appointment spend a few minutes asking yourself these questions. You should be able to gain some insight to how your hair might have changed.
What are your main challenges with your hair?
Has your hair become dull and lifeless? Are you experiencing hair loss?
What do you like best about your hair?
Enough of the negative, what do you like about your hair? You and your stylist can make a plan to highlight what you love most.
What have you done to your hair in the past that you dislike?
Ever had a grand hair idea that didn’t turn out the way you envisioned? It’s great to know when something didn’t work it the past. Keep an open mind with this one. A version of those terrible bangs you had when you were 12 just might work 30 years later.
Do you want to use styling tools and products?
Some people get joy and satisfaction spending time applying products and styling their hair. If that's your go for it. For others (me) spending little time styling their hair brings them happiness. I want to cleanse mine once every 4 days or so. When it is hair washing day I scrub it with New Wash Original from Hairstory, our entire family uses it. What do you think your hair type is, straight, wavy, curly? Is it thick density or finer strands?
Because descriptive words can be very relative, it's good to communicate how you view your hair. Your hair care professional might see your hair in a different way. Perhaps you have always thought of your hair as straight but your stylist can see some waves and knows how to coax it out. Boom! you get that dreamy soft wave hairstyle by adding a little product and air drying.
Now you have a better understanding of how your hair might have changed over time. You can work with your hairstylist to find a new style to suit you best.
