Top Ten Easy Ways to Start A Sustainable Lifestyle

Beginning a sustainable lifestyle has been on my resolution list for 3 years now. I start thinking of all the things in and around our home that need to change then I get overwhelmed. The lifestyle tweaks were put on the back burner.

     What the heck is Sustainability?

Sustainability is the idea that because everything we need for survival depends on the natural environment, we need to maintain conditions where humans and nature can exists so that current and future generations can have the same resources.
Saving the planet isn't the only reason to make changes. With inflation at a 40 year high, money conservation is at the top of my priority list.
January is the month that all things seem possible. In our household we are starting with small but big impact practices and will build on those each month.
Here are 10 simple ways to a more eco-friendly lifestyle that could be started today.
  1. Shop your own closet. Follow stylist like @styled_by_blair for fresh ideas on what you already own.
  2. Simplify your wardrobe: donate anything you don't wear and don't replace clothing unless you actually need it.
  3. Begin buying used clothing, linens, and furniture. Check out local estate sales or host a clothing swap with friends.
  4. Grow your own vegetable and fruit garden.
  5. Use your vegetable scraps to make compost.
  6. Skip the paper gift wrap and try the Japanese style Furoshiki wrapping cloth.
  7. Get to cooking! Minimize your take out containers by cooking at home. I find some of my favorite recipes from @halfbakedharvest
  8. Use the plastics you have in your home as long as possible. Take a tip from grandma and wash out your food containers to reuse for containers.
  9. Air dry your hair when ever possible. Check out sustainable hair-care brands for a great leave in product such as Hair Balm from Hairstory.  Click here to save 20%

    • I love these ideas! I’m going to cut down on paper towel usage. I have over used them forever! Time to hit up an estate sale
